IT security is one of the major issues for an institution like ours, and its monitoring requires us to be able to control access to our network. On the WiFi side, the authentication implemented via the eduroam network fulfils this role. Unfortunately, on the wiring side, until now, few means of control were in place. In order to overcome this shortcoming, wired authentication via a captive portal will be gradually implemented at the level of our establishments’ wired sockets.

A captive portal is an application used to manage access to the establishment’s computer network by prompting users to authenticate themselves with their ENT credentials.

The user is then connected to a restricted Internet network, for Web only consultation.

For the computer hardware assigned to you in GLPI and which you have checked (see https://communication.centralelille.fr/inventaire-tous-concernes/) as well as for the hardware officially used to equip the computer rooms, access to the wired network will be completely transparent without the need for any action on your behalf. It will be established without proceeding via the captive portal, and access to the institution’s resources will remain the same as before.

However, any equipment not inventoried in GLPI (external machines, student machines, personal equipment) will be systematically redirected to the captive portal and will have limited access to the web consultation.

This portal will be rolled out gradually:

  • September 2022: Meeting rooms (A-025, Bossut and Aquarium) and IT teaching rooms managed by the IT Resources unit (PRI)
  • November 2022: Amphi, TD rooms
  • January 2023: Offices and associations
  • April 2023: Laboratories, workshops, etc.

By all means contact the PRI if you need additional information on this subject.
