Emeritus is a title that allows a retired university professor or lecturer to continue to provide assistance, on an ancillary and free basis, to the missions provided for in Article L. 123-3 of the French Education Code:
- Initial and continuing training throughout life;
- Scientific and technological research, the dissemination and promotion of its results for the benefit of society. The latter is based on the development of innovation, the transfer of technology where possible, the capacity to provide expertise and support to associations and foundations, recognised as being of public utility, and to public policies implemented in response to societal challenges, social, economic and sustainable development needs;
- Career guidance, social promotion and professional integration;
- The dissemination of humanist culture, in particular through the development of human and social sciences, and scientific, technical and industrial culture;
- Participation in the construction of the European Higher Education Area;
- International cooperation.
The request for the emeritus status may or may not be combined with a request for voluntary collaboration. Depending on the approach, the University Professor (“Professeur d’Université” – PU) or Senior Lecturer (“Maître de conférences” – MCF) must send:
- A request for emeritus status without volunteer activity (designation of a title)
- A request for emeritus status with a request for voluntary activity
Each request is made via a form to be sent to the Human Resources unit. The PUs and MCFs concerned by an emeritus application renewal or by an initial application will be informed of the procedures to be followed by the Human Resources unit during the first quarter of each year. The application form will be sent to the PUs and MCFs concerned .
The opinion of the limited Scientific Council is requested each year for PU and MCF applications, during the month of June. The establishment’s Director General decides following the reasoned opinion of the limited Scientific Council.
The emeritus status last for three years and is renewable twice.
For emeritus status applications for the year 2023/2024, the PUs and MCFs concerned will be contacted by the HR unit.
