If the power grid is no longer balanced, offloading operations will be set up by network operator Enedis. The upshot of an offloading operation is a scheduled, localised, and temporary power outage. These outages will occur at peak consumption periods, between 8 am and 1 pm, or 6 pm and 8 pm.

Our two campuses could be impacted by these measures.

The risk of potential power shortages will hinge mainly on the weather in January, where Météo France forecasts a cold spell during this period.

Accordingly, institutions are invited to adapt their continuity plans to anticipate these scenarios, especially as offloading operations will only be notified at the last minute, as indicated in the chronology of ENEDIS’ exceptional and controlled power outages setup (see figure below).

For this purpose, a crisis unit has been established and has already convened for the first time. Composed of the Director General, the Director General of Services, the directors of the internal schools, the director of the PhD/Master’s degree programmes, the director of communication, and the managers of the heritage, IT resources, human resources and technological resources divisions, its mission is to define the procedures required to inform students and staff, shut down and secure everything requiring this, as well as the procedures for resuming activities.

The measures adopted in the event of any offloading operation will be communicated on 9 January.

Recommendations:

The actual implementation of offloading periods depends on our collective ability to reduce our power consumption needs. The shortage in power will be slight, and all our efforts, however small they may seem, will count. For all that, the risk is serious.

That is why everyone is strongly encouraged to reduce their consumption.

Within the establishment, the use of energy-intensive equipment must be limited/avoided in January.
