The aim of the ASEL (Association Science et Livre) is to promote scientific culture for the appreciation of all, in particular through books. It is organising the 11th edition of its annual “Science en livre” festival, which will take place from 23-25 March 2022 at the Lilliad learning centre.
In this context, a conference will be given by Rose-Noëlle Vannier on the topic of “Hydrogen: a vector for energy and decarbonisation” on Thursday 24 March at 6:30 pm.
Hydrogen is now considered as an energy vector for storing electricity generated intermittently or during off-peak periods, but also as a means of decarbonisation. Produced by electrolysis, it can be injected directly into the gas network (at a rate of up to 20%), where we talk about hythane (GRHYD project in Dunkirk, coordinated by Engie). It can be transformed into methane by a reaction with carbon dioxide, or into other platform molecules to produce new fuels, or it can be used directly in fuel cells to reproduce electricity. Companies like ArcelorMittal are considering its direct use for the reduction of steel.
After outlining hydrogen’s context and possible applications, the presentation will end with a focus on research activities in this area in the Hauts-de-France region and, more specifically, on the Villeneuve d’Ascq site.
