The Materials and Transformations Unit (UMET – UMR CNRS 8207) is pleased to celebrate its 10th anniversary during a morning of exchanges on Wednesday, June 16 from 9 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Founded in 2010 with a view to bringing together most of Lille’s activities and skills in the field of materials science and engineering, UMET now has 200 employees, including several ERC and IUF winners. With 4 tutelages (CNRS, Centrale Lille, INRAE and University of Lille), it is organised into 6 thematic teams: Molecular and Therapeutic Materials, Earth and Planetary Materials, Physical Metallurgy and Materials Engineering, Polymer Systems Engineering, Plasticity and Processes at Interfaces and Material Hygiene.

The laboratory has recently been involved in the fight against Covid-19, both by becoming a reference laboratory in the Hauts-de-France to carry out the production of hydro-alcoholic gels and by launching various projects (textile filtering biocide for the design of breathing masks, new types of filtering and decontaminant masks, fast and very sensitive visual saliva test of COVID-19).

On 16 June, to celebrate the laboratory’s 10th anniversary, Centrale Lille is organising a morning of conferences and exchanges and will welcome Professor Jean-Marie Lehn, Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry. A unique and privileged moment to take a global perspective on complex matter, to approach the science of materials from a societal point of view and to revisit tomorrow’s research on materials.
